Nail Fungus

Avoiding Nail Fungus

The fungi that cause nail fungus are widespread. However, there are simple steps to take that may reduce the chance of being infected — or reinfected — with nail fungus.

  • Wash feet regularly with soap and water and dry them carefully.

  • Change socks or hosiery daily, and vary the shoes you wear to allow them to dry out between wearing. Synthetic socks wick away moisture more effectively than cotton or wool socks. Avoid tight-fitting shoes.

  • Wear flip-flops in gym showers and other shared showers, spas and around pools.

  • Treat athlete's foot early. Ask your doctor for advice on the best way to get rid of this fungus.

  • Avoid nail polish or artificial nails, as they prevent moisture that collects under the nails from evaporating.

  • Cut nails straight across. Nails are more susceptible to infection if the nail bed or cuticle is cut.

If you notice changes in your nail, check with your doctor to get a proper diagnosis. Continue to use medications for as long as your doctor recommends to treat nail fungus.
