AcneIntroduction to AcneAcne is a skin condition in which red, inflamed pimples (known as papules and pustules) and non-inflamed pimples (known as comedones) appear on the skin. These pimples usually appear on the face, but are sometimes also found on the chest and back. Acne primarily affects adolescents whose skin secretes an excessive amount of oil or sebum — from the sebaceous glands — caused by the hormonal changes of puberty. Beginning in the teen years and through adulthood, your body produces hormones called androgens, which are male hormones that are present in both men and women. Androgens cause excess oil to build up and clog your pores. These oil-clogged pores lead to whiteheads and blackheads. The degree to which hormones influence skin — and whether or not they cause acne — is different for each individual. |
